For several years now, the Barnegat High School competition cheer squad has been a viable force within New Jersey and continues to raise its level of performance as it strives to be one of the better teams in the country, with the ultimate goal of being at the top of the standings in its division of the Universal Cheerleader Association National Championships.

This winter, not only are the Bengal cheerleaders ready to make more noise at the national level, they’re also counting down the days until they take the main stage at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Fla.

“We can’t wait for February,” said new head coach Jessica McDermott. “This is our first year competing in the small varsity division at UCA nationals, and we could not be more excited.”

The excitement is warranted, too. Barnegat’s cheer crew recently swiped the top spot in the Northeast Regional Championships, outperforming 10 other squads. They also were third in the Game Day portion of the competition, solidifying their place as one of the prominent players when the national competition arrives Feb. 10-11.

“Our goal is to always perform to the best of our ability and fight for each stunt and for each other,” McDermott said. “The team has been preparing for Nationals since June with practices, clinics, camps and local competitions. We will continue to build and grow as a program, and I am so excited to see what the rest of the season has in store for this Bengals team.”

The rest of the season will be comprised of local and statewide competitions between now and the beginning of February, and once all the teams head for the UCA Nationals, McDermott’s Barnegat squad should be well prepared for the big dance.

This year’s squad is led by returning seniors Britney Adams, Ashley Brack, Trinity Harris, Gianna Lavelle-Butler, Jaylene McGirr-Lorentz, Kaitlyn Nueva and Gabriella Talluto, juniors Reannah Cooper and Gianna Spano, and sophomores Madison Brack, Kimberley Godfrey, Zaniyah Harris, Hailey Hill and Emma Kelly. The newcomers to the crew are juniors Juliana Cascio and Victoria Leonard, and freshmen Destiny Fratianni, Gabriela Kovaly, Samantha Madej, Luiz Pedraza and Erin Rhinesmith.
