The Barnegat Township Police Department’s newest member is Ptl. Christian Negron, who was sworn in by Mayor Frank Caputo at the Nov. 13 township committee meeting. Negron, 23, has completed training at the Ocean County Police Academy in Lakewood. He will also undergo a 10-week field training program coordinated by Barnegat.

He has a sociology degree from Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

Police Chief Keith Germain noted that Negron, who was born in Puerto Rico, will be the department’s first officer who is fluent in Spanish.

“That’s something that could turn out to be very important for us,” he said.

Germain said Negron will replace James O’Hearn, who recently retired as a patrolman. The department’s roster is at 49.

Two more new hires are possible next year, with the likelihood that two other officers will be retiring. E.E.
