Barnegat Leader Winter Sports Preview

Barnegat Hoops Outlook Rosy With Revello Leading the Way

Dec 15, 2017

When Mike Puorro took over the Barnegat High School varsity basketball team in 2014, he knew he had some work cut out for him. The Bengal hoopsters were 8-41 the previous two seasons and started out the 2013-14 campaign by losing their first 17 games.

But the outlook is a lot rosier now for the Shore Conference B-South team, which last season set a record for wins (18) and made it to the semifinal round of the  NJSIAA South Jersey Group II boys basketball playoffs before losing to Camden, 50-30.

“I have my top six players coming back, so I’m excited about our prospects,” said the coach. “Hopefully, we can compete for a division championship, qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament and make another run in the South Jersey Group II playoffs.”

Since Puorro’s taking over the Bengals, one constant has been point guard Mike Revello, a starter since his freshman year. Revello was the leading scorer with 470 points, good for a 16.2 game average. He scored a school record 38 in the opening playoff round against Cape May Tech. Revello, who was an All-Division first team selection, was second in assists per game (3.5) and was first in three-point baskets (44)

“Mike starts the year 52 points shy of being the first Barnegat player to score 1,000 points,” said Puorro. “He has a tremendous court sense, and I could see that even when he was a freshman.”

Other returning starters are senior guard Carson Francisco, senior forward Alex Grogan and junior forward Sean Morris.

Francisco was the second best scorer, with 13.4 per game, and also had a team-high 112 assists (3.9) per game and 79 steals (2.2).

Top rebounder was Grogan, with 200 (6.9 per game). He also was second in three-point baskets, with 43.

At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, Morris provides an intimidating inside presence.

“Someone that strong, athletic and quick gives us another dimension,” said Puorro.

The coach said other returnees include junior forwards Parth Patel and Brian Finucan, and senior guard/forward Thomas Krey.

Newcomers include junior guard David Ciani, sophomore forwards Devyn DeFilipo and Shane Savastano, sophomore guards Brendan Revello, Nick Revello and Matt White, and freshman guard Lawrence Davis.

The Bengals open their season Friday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. on the road against Pinelands Regional. The first home gome is Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 6:30 p.m. against Donovan Catholic.

Barnegat is also playing in the Rumson Bulldog Classic, running Wednesday, Dec. 27 and Friday, Dec. 29.
