Jan 24, 2018

The Barnegat High School Jr. ROTC holds a pancake breakfast on Sunday, Feb. 11, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at American Legion Post 232, 499 North Main St. (Route 9). Tickets are $7 per person ($5 for children 12 and younger). Pancakes, scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, coffee and juice will be served.

“All proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly towards the development of the Navy JROTC program and cadets,” said Master Chief Michael D. Dunkin, instructor, “specifically to their end of year awards banquet and for the various equipment needed by the unit.”

Dunkin served 24 years in the U.S. Navy before retiring in 2007. For the past nine years, Dunkin had headed up the JROTC program at Colts Neck High School before taking the reins at Barnegat, which until this fall never had ROTC. Previously, Barnegat students interested in ROTC had to enroll at a program at Southern Regional High School.

Course objectives include to promote patriotism, develop informed and responsible citizens, promote habits of orderliness and precision, develop a high degree of personal honor and self-reliance, promote an understanding of the basic elements and need for national security, develop respect for and an understanding of the need for authority in a democratic society, promote community service, develop incentives to live healthy and drug-free, develop leadership potential, provide an alternative to gangs, promote high school completion and provide information on the military services as a possible career.
