Barnegat Light Postmaster Reminds Snowbirds of Mail Forwarding Options

Oct 04, 2017

Barnegat Light is a unique place for a dozen reasons. One of them is the fact that the community claims their mail at the cottage-sized post office; there is no mail delivery here. When winter comes, “snowbirds” may want to make arrangements to get their mail forwarded to their other address.

Postmaster Dorothy Mathis recently spoke at a Barnegat Light Taxpayers Association meeting about two options for forwarding mail.

One is premium forwarding, which costs $19.35 to enroll in. Mail is gathered once a week and forwarded, at a cost of $19.35 each shipment, after the original enrollment fee is paid.

The second is free forwarding, which is done every day for first-class mail. However, there are certain restrictions. Periodicals are forwarded only for the first 60 days. Packages could be subject to postage due.

The above details and more can also be found on the website usps.com, under the heading “track and manage,” then “forward mail.”

At least 200 families in town are property owners who aren’t here in the winter, according to estimates.

The town has its own ZIP code, 08006, separate from the 08008 of the rest of Long Beach Island.  —M.S.
