Barnegat Ordinance Would Change Work Eligibility for Officials Leaving Office

Aug 15, 2018

An ordinance introduced by the Barnegat Township Committee Aug. 7 stipulates that upon leaving the five-member group, one would not be eligible to take up a township position for two years.

Committeeman Albert Bille said the ordinance grew out of criticism made when Martin Lisella resigned his post as committeeman to become township administrator in 2015. Then this past January, Susan McCabe resigned her committee post and was awarded a contract to serve as Barnegat’s labor counsel, human resources director and conflict attorney.

“I don’t think the criticisms were justified because they’re both doing great jobs,” said Bille. “But I think we needed to clear up this matter of perception, and this seems like a fair compromise.”

Bille said committee members would also be ineligible for stipends. He noted that McCabe had received a stipend for doing some legal work for the township while in office.

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for the next meeting, on Tuesday, Sept. 4, at 10 a.m. —E.E.
