Barnegat Police Department Undergoing Exhaustive Review

Jul 17, 2017

In 2011, the Barnegat Township Police Department made history by becoming the first Ocean County department to receive international accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.

But to keep the designation, the department has to undergo reviews every three years. Barnegat Chief  Richard J. Dugan said this week, a team of assessors conducted an exhaustive review of all aspects of the Barnegat department’s policy, procedures, management, operations and support services. Dugan said if successful, Barnegat will remain the only CALEA accredited police department in Ocean County, and one of only eight municipal police departments in New Jersey to achieve CALEA accreditation.

He said verification by the assessment team that the Barnegat Police Department meets the commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain international accreditation, a highly coveted recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

Lt. Jeff Ryan said the department received state accreditation in 2008 through the New Jersey Association of Chiefs of Police.

“CALEA accreditation is a lot more encompassing,” said Ryan. “There are 105 standards agencies must comply with in the New Jersey Police Chief’s Association program. There are 189 standards we must comply with in the CALEA program.”

The CALEA assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar, but out-of-state agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview employees, and visit agency assets and locations where compliance can be witnessed. Once the assessors complete their review, they will report back to the full commission, which will decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.

“When you’re one of eight departments in the state to get this international accreditation, that means you are a well-run police department,” said Township Committeeman John Novak, police department liaison. “I’m confident that after the assessment team reviews everything, they will keep that coveted status.” —E.E.
