Barnegat Schools Superintendent: Beware of Momo Challenge

Jan 23, 2019

Following a lead from Brick Township School District, Barnegat Township School District Superintendent Brian Latwis recently warned parents of the “Momo Challenge” that has been circulating on social media.

Calling it a “dangerous game,” Latwis urged all parents and guardians to become aware of the challenge and their children’s use of social media.

“It is very alarming,” he said in a letter to parents. “The communications through the Momo challenge begins with a chat that asks the receiver to perform small tasks and then escalates to more serious violent acts and even self inflicted harm, requesting photographs for proof.”

The challenge features a frightening looking avatar that threatens those who do not perform the tasks.

Latwis said that last month, Brick Township school officials sent out an alert warning parents to monitor their children’s social media usage after first-graders were apparently discussing the game. Latwis said they believe a student was exposed to the challenge at home.

“We don’t know of any students in Barnegat who have been exposed to it,” he said. “From what I understand, the kid in Brick Township was really frightened by it and he had trouble sleeping. More than ever, parents and children have to be more aware of what’s out there in the social media.” E.E.
