When Barnegat High School holds its graduation on Wednesday, June 20, the school’s Select Choir will perform the national anthem and “The Prayer,” a song popularized by a Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli duet. It will cap what select choir director Natalie Pinto Altonjy calls “an amazing year” for the vocally gifted teens.

Some of the group’s highlights took place in Atlantic City, where in December they performed in the “Christmas Spectacular” at Boardwalk Hall and later performed “Handel’s Messiah” with the Stockton University Choir at the Borgata Hotel and Casino. In addition, the group was featured in the WOBM-FM Christmas Choir Contest, making the top five.

Altonjy said the young singers performed and competed in The Ocean County Performing Arts “Salute to Ocean County, A Celebration of Arts & Heritage” at Ocean County College. They won first runner-up. The choir won first place in their division along with a highest rating of “superior” in the “Music in the Parks” competition in Douglassville, Pa.

“The choir performed throughout the year at numerous venues, including our holiday concert and our spring concert, which had a theme of the ’60s,” said the choir director.

“I’m so proud of these talented, dedicated and respectful young adults,” said Altonjy. “Because of their mutual respect for each other, these choir members shared a special bond like I’ve never witnessed before. Therefore, their love and passion for the select choir, and each other, has brought our school to new heights this year.”  —E.E.
