Barnegat Wildfire Safety Council Meeting May 10

May 02, 2018

The next quarterly meeting of the Barnegat Township Wildfire Safety Council will be held on Thursday, May 10, 1 p.m. in the township municipal courtroom.

Mayor Frank Caputo, who is township liaison to the group, said helicopter pilots from the New Jersey Forest Fire Service will be guest speakers.

Caputo said there would also be reports from the township’s Firewise communities. The program encourages communities to develop projects to slow or stop the progress of a wildfire, such as erecting fuel breaks – gaps in vegetation that act as a barrier to slow or stop the progress of a wildfire – and clearing out underbrush and dead or diseased trees.

“We were the first municipality in the state to have such a council,” said Caputo. “It was very important because we know the western areas of town are at great risk for a forest fire.”

The Brighton at Barnegat community is having a Firewise cleanup day on May 5.  —E.E.
