Barnegat’s Revello Tops Hoops 1,000-Point Milestone

Jan 24, 2018

On Dec. 29, Mike Revello became the first Barnegat High school boys basketball player to reach 1,000 career points.

The senior accomplished the feat against Fort Hamilton of Brooklyn at the Bulldawg Holiday Classic at Rumson-Fair Haven High School. He scored 16 points and handed out eight assists before exiting the game late in the third quarter with Barnegat leading by more than 30 points. The final score was 68-44.

Revello has been a starter since his freshman season, which was the same year Mike Puorro took over as Bengals head coach.

“Mike is a team-first guy,” said Puorro. “His 1,000 points were not done selfishly. He’s not someone looking to pad his stats. He tries to make everyone around him better.”

Puorro was quite the basketball player himself; he is Point Pleasant Borough High School’s second-place all-time scorer with 1,159 points. Does he ever see himself in Revello?

“We’re similar in that we’re very competitive and want to win,” he said.

When Mike Revello graduates after this season, three more Revellos will remain on the team. He has triplet brothers – Brendan, Chris and Nicholas – all sophomore guards.

“Fortunately for me, they’re not identical!” Puorro remarked.

Mike Revello leads all Bengals in scoring this season, with 182 points (14 per game). Senior guard Carson Francisco has 170 (13.1 ppg). Revello has made the most three-pointers with 22.

After a Jan. 22 home loss to Lakewood, the Bengals stood at 8-5 (3-4 in B-South).

“We got off to a rough start, losing three of our first four,” said Puorro. “We’ve been tough defensively, as we have only given up 50 or more points twice.”

The Bengals’ schedule includes Thursday, Jan. 25 at Donovan Catholic, and a home encounter with Lacey on Friday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. After three road contests, they return home on Friday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m. to face Manchester.
