Beach Game On – With Challenges

By PATTY KELLY | Jun 28, 2017

After a grueling week at work, I finally was preparing to get to LBI. That was when everything seemed to go south for me. I soooo needed to get my beach game on, and it was quite apparent to all who were around me that I had not gotten it together quite yet.

The day had started out rainy so I decided to sleep in. Why not, as work has me up and running bright and early during the week? Waking up at 10 a.m., I figured I’d get a start on the household chores as there was cleaning to be done. As I went downstairs to collect my handy broom, I noticed that one of my cats had decided to use a throw carpet as the cat box. I thought to myself, “This day is not starting out so great.”

After cleaning up that mess and mopping the floors, I decided I had had enough. It was noon, the sun was finally shining and I needed to put my toes in the sand for the first time this year. I texted my girlfriend and headed to the beach.

Upon my arrival my friend said, “Where’s your beach chair?” I had just walked up the long hill to the beach and now I had to walk all the way back (uphill both ways due to the dune replenishment) to get my chair. It was then that I reminded myself that I was slightly off my beach game for some reason.

That was only the beginning, however. In usual fashion, midday we headed down to our favorite local watering hole in an effort to hear some good music and see some friendly faces. We were not disappointed. With our favorite tunes being played by the band, I thought, “What could possibly go wrong now?” I ordered a cocktail, but when the waitress brought it to the table I noticed it didn’t look right. Well, it wasn’t. I had ordered the wrong cocktail for no reason whatsoever. In good form, the waitress brought me my usual and dumped the unusual into the trash. OK, so that was number three. As they say, things happen in threes, so I thought I was safe, but I was wrong again.

We got home and I gathered my toiletries to go to the outside shower. It was after I had gotten myself all soaked that I realized I had forgotten a washcloth. Some would say that’s no big deal, but after the day I was having, it was to me. All showered up, we finally headed out to our favorite restaurant for dinner with a group of friends. Parking was challenging as usual, but as luck would have it I found a spot right in front of the restaurant! Now what are the chances of that happening? I thought my luck was finally changing.

But then I did something stupid. I parked in the opposite direction of the flow of traffic. I told myself I should probably turn the car around to go with the flow, but in my haste to make our reservation, I pushed the thought aside. Needless to say, when I came out I had a ticket on my windshield. I was not happy. I knew it was my own fault. The entire day had been a little off. I had not yet gotten my beach game on.

I pondered relentlessly as to what it would take to straighten myself out so my day would be better. I hit the sack early and got up early to do the thing I knew would straighten me out. I went to church. Now I’m not gonna go all spiritual and religious on you. I’m just saying sometimes it takes a peaceful moment and time to reflect to put you on the straight and narrow. True to form and by the grace of God, my day went better than the day before.

We met up with our friends after Mass for coffee on their veranda while enjoying the beautiful day. I remembered my beach chair, I took a washcloth into the shower and I parked with the flow of traffic.

The moral of my story is sometimes it takes a little LBI, patience and reflection to get your beach game on. Now if I only could get the rest of my life to flow this easily.

P.S. I shouldn’t mention that when I went to take my outside shower again, I had forgotten to bring the soap. But hey, that’s why God made shampoo!
