Beach Haven Ordinance Mandates Front Façades to Face Bay Avenue

May 23, 2018

An ordinance introduced last week by the Beach Haven Borough Council will require every Bay Avenue building’s front façade to face the roadway between 12th and Pearl Street. According to the ordinance, the new measure “affects every building or structure hereafter constructed, moved or altered or any existing structure with susbstantial improvement of at least 50 percent.”

Borough Manager/Clerk Sherry Mason said the ordinance was drawn up in response to some homes recently built on Bay Avenue near the Beach Haven School.

“The rear of the homes face Bay Avenue, and it doesn’t look good,” she said. “We wanted to make sure that doesn’t happen again. We didn’t have anything in the books to stop it.”

Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis said the measure will help create uniformity in the business district.

“Once you get past Pearl Street, it’s almost all residential, so we weren’t too concerned about that area,” she said.

A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for the next meeting, on Monday, June 10, at 7 p.m. E.E.
