Christa Steiner of Beach Haven is having a busy week running for Miss New Jersey, but she would have been busy anyway: she is the manager of the Show Place Ice Cream Parlour. With the traditional post-Memorial Day lull on LBI coming to an end as schools close and families are free to visit the Island, a mostly sunny seven-day National Weather Service forecast, and the fact that Surflight Theatre, adjacent to the Show Place, kicked off its 2018 main stage summer season on Tuesday, Steiner knew she was going to have to quickly step up to her summer pace.

But with the Miss New Jersey Pageant thrown into the mix, she practically has to do an impression of Justify in the Belmont Stakes.

The 2018 Miss New Jersey Pageant Finals are set for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 16, at the Ocean City Music Pier. But Steiner will have to compete in preliminary rounds at the Music Pier on Thursday and Friday evenings. That’s after appearing in the Miss New Jersey Parade at 7 p.m. on Wednesday on the Ocean City boardwalk. Indeed, “Miss New Jersey Week” began on June 10.

Steiner, though, is accustomed to juggling her time. She spent the 2017-18 academic year as a student at the Manhattan School of Music while, at the same time, performing her duties as Miss Atlantic Shores, a crown she claimed last August after deciding that qualifying pageant fit her schedule better than the Miss Ocean County Pageant. She made many appearances and speaking engagements in the state’s schools raising awareness of her personal platform – “Art4Smart,” which promotes arts education in New Jersey’s public school system. Steiner also raised funds for Surflight’s education program and the Children’s Miracle Network and helped restart Surflight to Go, an educational touring company that will perform three different educational musicals in K-12 schools throughout the state in the spring of 2019.

You might figure Steiner could use a break, but she is hoping to be the one of 28 contestants who emerges from the pageant as Miss New Jersey 2018 and who will go on to represent the Garden State in this September’s Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City.

Tickets for the preliminary and final rounds of the Miss New Jersey Pageant may be purchased online at —R.M.
