Beach Surprise

To the Editor:

It was a hot night in the summer of 2011 when one of my friends dragged me along with her to a carnival in the Bronx, N.Y. I had zero expectations for meeting anyone.

We didn’t exchange numbers that night, but he was always in the back of my mind. It wasn’t until five months later I had the courage to reach out to him through Facebook. From our first date at the movies to our first anniversary, we never thought our story would turn out the way it has.

Before Leo and I had met, we were each going down a path that we knew wasn’t picture-perfect. It wasn’t until a year after we were together when I realized that we were both changing each other, for the better. After years of unknowns, I was able to turn a passion of mine into a lifelong career, and Leo established himself as someone everyone always told him he couldn’t be.

Earlier this summer, my family, Leo and I were enjoying our annual summer vacation at our “second home” in Holgate on Long Beach Island. It was a gorgeous Sunday on July 30 when my life was forever changed. Everyone had arrived that morning and we spent the day on the beach, enjoying the sunshine and cloudless sky. I had been told weeks before that we were taking family portraits on the beach that evening. To my surprise, as I was taking pictures with Leo, he said to me, “Shelby, I have to talk to you about something important.”

At that moment, I looked over my left shoulder to see my mom, dad and two sisters holding up four surfboards saying, “Will you marry me?” In complete and utter shock, I bent over with tears of joy as Leo got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him.
