Beagle Pup Donated to Family Whose Pooch Was Apparently Stolen

Nov 07, 2018

A Barnegat Township family heartbroken over the apparent theft of their 10-month-old beagle puppy received a big surprise on Nov. 5. With the pup’s owner, Mildred Abreu, reaching out on social media to help locate the missing pooch, Puppy Pawz Rescue responded by donating a 9½-week-old beagle puppy named Rocky.

It was on Oct. 24 when Abreu noted that her puppy, named Luna, was missing from their yard on First Street. One week later, the Barnegat Police Department announced that Detective William Hetrick arrested Robert Johnson, 40, also of First Street, for third degree theft in connection with the missing beagle. Johnson was processed and released, pending a hearing in municipal court.

Abreu’s neighbor, Erin Callahan, was with them when they were presented with Rocky.

“This was very upsetting because the family has three young children, and losing the pup was really hard on them,” she said. “But it was so great to see the smiles on their faces as they held their new puppy.”

Theresa Najjar, a Puppy Pawz Rescue member, said she was thankful for the exposure of the family’s situation on a Barnegat-based Facebook page.

“So many people were concerned and very sad for the family,” said Najjar. “This really touched the homeowners in the First Street area and other parts of town.”

Because Luna has not yet been recovered, police are still asking that anyone with additional information concerning the case contact Hetrick at 609-698-5000.  —E.E.
