Bigger Not Better

Aug 29, 2018

To the Editor:

Jay Mann, your column on flooding on LBI was interesting (“A Sinking Feeling: Nuisance Flooding Becoming Complex,” 8/8). You touched on run-off but could have said more.

The term of the century is “impervious cover,” and there’s way too much of it with paving (more parking lots, bigger parking lots, bigger houses with paved or concrete patios and walkways). Surely you have noticed all those cute, little, original built on sand/stone-based, typical shore bungalows get replaced by monster houses with lots of paving and huge expanses of roofing.

And meanwhile, Mother Nature re-re-re-reclaims replenishment – and more billions of dollars are spent while she laughs at the humans.

I have been loving Long Beach Island for 69 years – is it still recognizable? I hope Barney remains steadfast.
