On Wednesday, June 14, at 11 a.m., the Garden Club of Long Beach Island will host the dedication of the Blue Star Memorial By-Way at the Beach Haven Public Library. The ceremony will be held in front of the library flag pole on Beach Avenue. Following the dedication, light refreshments will be served courtesy of the club.

“We hope everyone will look around the library grounds, since the LBI Garden Club has been working very hard to make our gardens look even more beautiful than last year,” said Anna Serbek, library technician.

Beach Haven Mayor Nancy Taggart Davis and the Beach Haven School chorus as well as the rest of the school will participate in the dedication. In addition, a Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter from Vincentown will be in attendance.

“We’ve planted red, white and blue flowers around the memorial,” said Beverly Reitinger, club past-president and event coordinator.

She said the Blue Star Memorial program was founded during World War II by the president of the Garden Club of New Jersey to honor veterans.

“The Blue Star became an icon in World War II and was seen on flags and banners of homes for sons and daughters away at war,” said Reitinger. “It expanded to churches, businesses and highways. This program has been active all through the years to the present day, a fitting tribute to our armed forces. We are so proud of being part of this living tribute to our veterans. There are 35 Blue Star markers in the state so far, and 2,300 memorials throughout our country.”

In addition to this event, there will be a display of “Veterans from Beach Haven” who served in any wars, whether as military or civilians. The display will be on the hallway wall going into the Reference Room from the main part of the library.

Serbek said wars represented include the Civil War, World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam.
