When Kris and Colleen Lewis opened Oyster Creek Brewing Co. in May, they not only wanted to come up with some enticing varieties of beer, but some catchy, nuclear-themed names.

Located at 529 Route 9 (Unit 5) in the Waretown Plaza, the establishment is currently open on weekends. Customers first get a tour of the brewery, observing the process of creating the concoctions. After the tour, they are invited to taste various samples. You can drink varieties of the beers from 4-ounce cups or one with a 16-ounce glass.

Customers can take home beer in 32- or 64-ounce growlers.

“Or you can bring in a container and we’ll fill it,” said Kris Lewis.

Some of the menu listings include YELLOWcake Cream Ale, DARKmatter Vanilla Porter, ColdFUSION Coffee Stout, MELTdown Habañero DIPA (double imperial pale ale), PLUTONIUM94 Black IPA, RADIUM88 Rye, BETAparticle Blood Orange Wheat Ale, FALSEalarm Ale, ISOtope Citra Mosaic IPA and HEAVYwater Irish Heavy.

“Kris and I both graduated from Southern Regional High School in 1994, and plutonium is No. 94 on the periodic table of elements,” said Colleen Lewis. “We were the 88th brewery to be issued a permit in New Jersey and the 88th element is radium. That gave us an idea to have this special theme for our beers.”

Her husband has had some home brewing experience, which started 20 years ago when he bought a home brew kit for his father.

“We tried a few things out,” he said. “Later, I fine-tuned some of the recipes and invited friends to try them. Some of what we make here are based on the home recipes.”

“These types of breweries are popping up all over,” added Colleen. “It’s another way of enjoying beer and other drinks.”

Oyster Creek Brewing is open 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
