Sailors had plenty of air for the Club 420 Association 2018 U.S. National Championships last week. Hosted by Brant Beach Yacht Club, 292 C420 sailors took on Barnegat Bay, and California’s Ansgar Jordan and Patrick Mulcahy emerged as the Gold Fleet winners, totaling 26 points, which included a quartet of victories during the 10-race regatta.

New Jersey sailors Luke Arnone and Noble Reynoso managed three victories to keep things close atop the leaderboard, but ultimately finished second with 28 points, while the junior girls duo of Maddie Hawkins and Yumi Yoshiyasu placed third overall with 46 points. Jersey sailors Lachlan McGranahan and Ariel Cassaretto teamed up for a fourth-place finish, followed by Sarah Burn and Patricia Gerli in fifth.

The National Championships kicked off on July 17 with 15- to 24-knot winds during the first day of racing, comprising the first three races, two of which were won by Jordan and Mulcahy. The wind was significantly lighter for the next day’s four scheduled races, but still provided solid air of 7 to 14 knots for much of the time. The last day featured 8 to 10 knots at the start and steadily grew through the final two races.

As for the local sailors, Surf City Yacht Club’s Declan Botwinick and Brooke Schmelz placed 24th overall, while SCYC’s Brielle Willoughby and Madeline Demming finished 48th, and SCYC’s Bridget Green and Carrter Pearce ended up 79th.

In the Silver Fleet, Laura Ferraris and Lily Josephson took first, followed by Connor and Christopher Macken in second, and John Vail and Lucas Masiell third.

The Club 420 Association was established in 1980 to promote, foster, encourage and sponsor one-design sailing for youth sailors. The association annually sponsors a North American Championship, U.S. and Canadian National Championships as well as regional and team racing championships across North America, while promoting the class to all ability and experience levels of youth sailing.  —D.B.
