Calling All Mini Makers: New Weekly Art Workshops at Ann Coen Gallery

Jun 20, 2018

New this summer at the Ann Coen Gallery in Surf City, kids ages 6 to 9 are invited to weekly art workshops, every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon under a tent in the backyard.

For a $30 drop-in fee per child or $200 for the eight-week summer series, tykes will get personalized art guidance from Lisa Boyd, Pre-K4 teacher at Ethel A. Jacobsen Elementary School in Surf City. They will make a complete project in a different focus area each week: beginning June 28, Tic-Tac-Toe boxes; July 5, treasure map making; July 12, terra cotta planter decorating; July 19, silverware wind chimes; July 26, air-dry clay ornaments; Aug. 2, collage on foam surfboards; Aug. 9, printmaking with vegetables; and Aug. 16, picture frame painting.

Coen said the idea came about when she and her gallery assistant Calla Aniski were brainstorming about fun ideas for the summer. Coen’s son Archie is in Boyd’s class, so she approached Boyd about leading the workshops, and Boyd agreed and designed the curriculum.

As a result, the mini makers will get to exercise their imaginations and discover a wide array of creative techniques.

“Really, I want to just bring more art into kids’ lives,” Coen said. “Every parent says the kids love art class, and there are not that many art options on the Island.” If successful, Coen would like to explore the possibility of offering the weekly workshops year ’round, as an after-school enrichment activity.
