Before heading off to the Merchant Marine Academy later this month, Manahawkin resident and Surf City Yacht Club sailor Carrson Pearce figured it appropriate to compete in the Orange Coffee Pot Regatta as his youth sailing swan song. And he’s going off to the Merchant Marines on a high note.

Pearce easily captured the Orange Coffee Pot title on June 3, cruising his Laser Radial boat to first-place finishes in the four contested races and beating West River Sailing Club’s Nigel Heath by seven points. Heath ended up second behind Pearce in the first race before finishing third in the other three.

Severn Sailing Association’s David Waiting, who took second in the last race, was third overall with 22 points, while Cedar Point Yacht Club’s Ryosuke Sakai placed fourth overall with 23 points and SSA’s Bob Tan, who was second in the third race, took fifth with 26 points.

Of the locals, Surf City Yacht Club’s Christopher Araujo finished as high as fifth in the first race and ended up eighth overall with 37 points, while Dixon Pearce, Carrson’s father, placed 14th overall with 57 points. SCYC’s Newt Wattis was the only other local within the top-20, placing 17th with 58 points.

In the Laser class, Brant Beach Yacht Club’s Mike Russom finished tied with Andrew Puopolo but fell into second place based on the number of first-place finishes. Puopolo was first in the second and third race, while Russom finished as high as second in the first race. Behind them in fourth was SCYC’s Carrter Pearce, Carrson’s younger brother, who ended up with 20 points after winning the last race of the day.

Brant Beach’s Dennis Russom, who finished 21st in the 35-boat fleet with 85 points, and Don Hahl, who was 24th with 93, were the only other locals competing in the Laser races.  —D.B.
