When Kristen Crepezzi took over as children’s librarian at the Long Beach Island branch of the Ocean County Library in Surf City earlier this month, she knew things would get busy in a hurry. But that’s fine with the Barnegat Township resident, who isn’t a stranger to the Island.

“I taught ceramics at the arts foundation (Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences) and I worked at Island Golf in Surf City, so I know what it’s like during the summer,” she said. “I’m excited about all the programs we’ll be offering.”

From late June to mid-August, the library will be involved in the Summer Reading Club, with this year’s theme being “Libraries Rock.”

“Just about every day we’ll have some reading club-related program,” she said. “We’ll have arts and crafts, music, puppet shows, live animals, story times and more.”

A 2001 graduate of Southern Regional High School, Crepezzi started her initial career as a dental office assistant.

“But I always liked libraries,” she said. “As a student, I spent a lot of time reading at the Ocean County branch in Barnegat.”

Crepezzi said she became interested in a library career following Superstorm Sandy. She was impressed how the library reached out to people after the storm, having computers available for residents to file insurance claims as well as crisis counselors on hand to help people having difficulty coping with Sandy’s aftermath.

“It made me feel the library was a great way to serve the community,” said Crepezzi, who recently received her library science degree from Rutgers University. In the past year, she was teen librarian for the South Brunswick Library.

When the summer season ends, Crepezzi will then be focusing on programs with the Ethel A. Jacobsen Elementary School in Surf City and the LBI Grade School in Ship Bottom.

“I’ll also be working with students in the Southern Regional School District with my counterparts at the Stafford and Waretown branches,” she said.
