Cocktail Reception Benefits Free Health Center

May 23, 2018

Coastal Volunteers in Medicine will host a charity cocktail reception on Friday, June 1, 6 p.m. at the Gables in Beach Haven. The cost is $100 per person.

Coastal Volunteers in Medicine is a free nonprofit family health center treating more than 700 people from Southern Ocean County who do not have medical insurance. It is staffed by volunteer doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses and other caring individuals.

“We rely on private donations, grants and fundraisers like the cocktail reception to continue our work,” said Larry Picarello, board chairman of Coastal VIM. “Unfortunately, we are expecting an increase in the need for our services over the coming years. Our clients don’t qualify for Medicaid, but they don’t have enough to fall into the category of being able to afford it, or they have a job today, they lose it tomorrow.”

This week, the center began working from its new site in Stafford Township at 53 Nautilus Drive, Suite B-I.  Services include primary and ongoing care, physicals and health screenings, women’s and family care, diabetes and other chronic disease management, diagnostic testing, hypertension clinic, prescription assistance, social service referrals and health education.

“We do not provide emergency care,” said Picarello. “Our concept is a culture of caring, in that we believe in caring for the whole person who is going through difficult times.”
