Forty-eight surfers are set to compete in the 10th annual Coquina Jam to be held on the 68th Street beach in Long Beach Township, July 29 at 9 a.m. The Coquina Jam, sponsored by Jetty and presented by Hackensack Meridian Health, is an all-female, team surf contest and also a fundraising event, with proceeds to benefit David’s Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation, based in Manahawkin, on behalf of local female cancer patients.

Teams were selected on Monday, July 16, at Bayview Park. Participants were initially divided into two groups based on age. Their names were then written on the bottom of shells, and older surfers were paired up with younger surfers at random. Scoring for the bracket-style tournament will be based off the performance of both surfers. Amidst the excitement of the selection, David’s Dream & Believe Cancer Foundation Executive Director and Jetty Hall of Fame inductee Danielle Corso took the microphone to thank the surfers and to remind them “they’re surfing to save lives.”

Belmar-based rock group The Double Negatives provided music for the evening. Fans of Bayview Park’s Monday night concert series would recognize the group, which played covers ranging from Michael Jackson to the Grateful Dead. Comprised of vocalist Rob Connolly, bassist Dimitri Almeyda, guitarist Brandon Campana, keyboardist Dan O’Hara and drummer Kevin McDaniel, the band returned to the Island for the first time since New Year’s. With four of the five members native to the Island, the show had a “hometown feel,” according to Connolly.

Eyes are now forward to the event, looming less than two weeks away. The Coquina Jam tends to draw a competitive crowd. A potentially dynamic duo was matched on Monday evening; Jetty team rider and Long Beach Island native Jamie DeWitt will team up with Carly Cobl for the event. Cobl, 13, of Manasquan, has been surfing since she was 6 and began competing two years ago. With a deep love for the water, Cobl finds herself competitively in the waves nearly every weekend of the summer, most recently on July 8 where she took third at a local event in Long Beach, N.Y. Sponsored by Bare Wires Surf Shop based in Spring Lake, Cobl is sure to make a splash at her first Coquina Jam.

The competition will be followed by an after party at Kubel’s Too. Since its inception, the event has raised over $56,000 for cancer patients in need. A no-wave date is scheduled for Aug. 5.
