Barnegat Leader Winter Sports Preview

David MacGillivray to Lead Barnegat Boys Bowlers; Kantenweins Are Keys to Girls’ Success

Dec 15, 2017

Junior David MacGillivray returns with his 200 average to lead the Barnegat High School boys varsity bowling team, which last year finished third in the Shore Conference B-South division with a 28-17 record..

Head coach Mike Palmieri said the team will miss last year’s anchor, Jeremy Pilovsky, who has graduated. MacGillivray will take over that spot.

Another key returner is junior Matt Kulpa, who finished last season with a 169 average and is expected to push that into the 180s.

Palmieri said the final returning varsity bowler is sophomore Matt Charland. He averaged 135 his freshman season, and finishing in the 160s is a legitimate goal.

Newcomers are sophomore Mike Pulig and freshman Anthony Ballas.

“Mike bowled junior varsity” last year, the coach said.

For the girls varsity bowling team, senior twins Kelly and Amber Kantenwein will look to lead the girls varsity bowling team, which hopes to improve on last year’s record of 23.5 wins and 21.5 losses. It was good for third place in the Shore Conference B-South division.

Kelly Kantenwein sported a 139 average, while Amber’s norm was a 136. Junior Precious Anderson has the top returning average, with 145.

“She (Anderson) will step into the anchor position this year,” said head coach Jonathan Gordon. “With a still relatively young roster, Amber and Kelly look to lead the way for the Bengals to qualify for the Shore Conference Tournament once again this year.”

Other returnees include senior Katherine Rydarowski (122 average), junior Shauna Yodice (116) and sophomores Lily Spagnola (115) and Jasmine Reid (86).

Rounding out the team are freshmen Allanagh Dombrowski and Rebecca Bykow. —E.E.
