Deaf Awareness Expo and ASL Holiday Show at Grunin Center in December

Nov 28, 2018

Ocean County College will host two events early next month to bring the deaf and hearing communities together. A Deaf Awareness Expo, on Friday, Dec. 7, and the annual ASL (American Sign Language) Holiday Rock and Roll Show, on Saturday, Dec. 8, will be held at the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts on the Toms River campus.

The expo, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 7th, is free and open to the public. Vendors, both deaf and hearing, will sell their wares, or will offer information on services such as interpreter referral agencies and Sorenson Communications. Special guest performers include Keith Wann, at noon, and Crom Saunders at 1:30 p.m.

Wann is an ASL advocate, comedian, actor and performance artist who travels all over the country performing his side-splitting act showcasing heartfelt real life stories from his youth as the child of two deaf parents. He has been featured in several short films and commercials, as well as “Law and Order,” and he is a writer/actor for “Sign It ASL,” a Signing Time Foundation project. Wann has also interpreted a number of Broadway shows, including “School of Rock,” “West Side Story,” “Shrek: The Musical” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

Performer, presenter, writer and teacher Saunders has worked in almost every theater position possible, both backstage and on stage, in addition to lecturing on a wide variety of topics. “Cromania!” is Saunders’ one-man show featuring skits that combine pop culture, impersonations, improvisation, American Sign Language, puns and physical feats in one big laugh fest. Saunders created the show based on his love of books, theater and movies, both contemporary and classic.

The ASL Holiday Rock and Roll Show begins at 7 p.m. Attendees can enjoy favorite holiday songs played by a DJ while faculty and students from OCC’s Interpreter Training Program sign each song in American Sign Language.

Tickets will be sold at the door, and are $12 for the public, or $10 with student ID. For more information on these events, contact Kathy Basilotto at kbasilotto@ocean.edu.  —J.K.-H.
