Barnegat Leader

Democrats Giving It Another Whirl in Barnegat

Apr 04, 2018

If at first you don't succeed ...

Paul Whitcraft and Daniel Ward are trying again to win two seats on the Barnegat Township Committee after coming up short last year as the Democrat Party ticket.

The two are running uncontested in the June primary, as are school board member Linda Kroft and newcomer Pasquale Pipi, who are the Republican candidates.

Former township Committeewoman Elaine Taylor and former candidate Bill Cox have filed as Independents running with the slogan “Unity Over Politics, Republicans & Democrats Coming Together for a Better Barnegat.”

“We ran last year because we believe in a two-party system and that there is room for some fresh ideas,” said Ward.

Last November, Republican incumbents Alfonso Cirulli and John J. Novak won re-election with 3,394 and 3,333 votes, respectively. Ward received 2,761 votes and Whitcraft earned 2,755.

“Even though we lost, we felt encouraged,” said Ward. “We found that a lot of people were receptive to our message, and hopefully this time more people will be.”

Republican incumbent Mayor Frank Caputo and Committeeman Joseph Lopes declined to seek re-election. Lopes was appointed to the committee in February to serve the last year of Susan McCabe’s term. She stepped down from the all-Republican committee to become the municipality’s labor counsel/human resources director and conflict attorney.

“These (Pipi and Kroft) are the candidates that the membership has endorsed,” said McCabe, Republican Club president.

“I moved to Barnegat in 2004 and I fell in love with the town,” said Pipi. “Many of the people in the Republican club are good friends of mine, so when they approached me about running, I accepted.”

Cox said, “Elaine is a registered Democrat and I’m a registered Republican. The Republican political machine runs deep in Barnegat and the committee is in a state of disarray, so this is a good opportunity for us to run because we don’t like what is going on.”  —E.E.
