A new life drawing social event comes to the region on Wednesday, Aug. 8, when the Union Market at Tuckerton Seaport hosts life model (and yoga instructor) Emily Matthews, who will pose, undraped, in sets of 20-30 minutes from 6 to 8 p.m. Poses will range from 2-minute "gestures" to 20-minute studies. Props, accessories or fabrics may be incorporated for added visual intrigue. Artists should bring their own art supplies and are invited to BYOB, but the café will be open for snacks and beverages to purchase. Admission is $15.

The Aug. 8 session is the first of its kind at the venue, but organizers hope to make it a monthly gathering for artists of all skill levels to hang out and create together, freely, in any medium of their choosing. No formal instruction is offered, but according to facilitator Victoria Ford, “everyone is a student, and everyone is a teacher.” The atmosphere is perfect for sharpening skills or experimenting with new techniques.

Participants at such events, which are growing in popularity both in Southern Ocean County and the Toms River area, often offer feedback and encouragement on each other’s work – though no one is under any obligation to share. It’s a casual, welcoming setting, open to anyone who enjoys drawing from life, Ford said. Some artists bring watercolors, or pastels; some set up portable easels, or sit with a small sketchbook, she noted.

The Union Market, located at 120 West Main St., Tuckerton, completes the “120 trifecta,” i.e. a funny coincidence of addresses. Ford also runs figure drawing sessions at the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences (located at 120 Long Beach Blvd., Loveladies) on Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and at the Stafford Township Historical Society’s old Baptist church (located at 120 North Main St., Manahawkin) on Sunday mornings from 10 to noon.
