Enough Is Enough

Sep 27, 2017

To the Editor:

The First Amendment to our Constitution has enshrined our right to offend as the bedrock of free speech, but in recent years, the right not to be offended has taken precedence.

Political correctness is running rampant and it may be destroying our country. The so-called progressive establishment wants to control what we say and how we think. They have a relentless propaganda machine that never stops working. Every day, the mainstream media bombards us with subtle messages that makes it clear what is “appropriate” and what is “inappropriate,” and most Americans quietly fall in line with this unwritten speech code.

Words and expressions that may have been used for decades are now being scrutinized by the PC police. It’s Happy Holiday, not Merry Christmas; global warming is now known as climate change; an illegal alien is undocumented; the handicapped are referred to as physically challenged. The list keeps changing, so nobody really knows what words and expressions to avoid.

If you don’t buy into this ideology you subject yourself to being criticized, censured and denounced. The movement is sweeping across our nation’s campuses, establishing safe zones where students can feel insulated against offensive language. At what point do we say enough is enough with the whitewashing of our language and the removal of our religious and historical symbols in order not to offend?

The history and culture of our great country is being ripped apart. The elimination of past mistakes will almost guarantee that they will be made again. Freedom of speech, what a great time-honored idea!
