Expect Fierce Competition in Annual Long Beach Island Triathlon on Sept. 17

Sep 13, 2017

For the past eight years, hundreds of athletes have descended on Long Beach Township for the third Sunday of September to compete in the Long Beach Island/Bayview Park Triathlon. Such is expected to be the case again on Sept. 17, when DQ Events hosts the event, which also includes a duathlon and aqua/bike competition for those athletes who want to compete only in the swim and bike portions of the competition.

But this year’s event will be slightly different in that it also serves as part of the USA Triathlon Mid-Atlantic Paratriathlon Race Series, which runs from March through October; participating paratriathletes earn points based on their performances. Overall series winners are awarded at the end of the season.

While the paratriathletes have some additional needs and a slightly different set of rules, they seek no extraordinary waivers or undue assistance that would set them apart from the field, the race coordinators remarked.

The triathlon course includes a quarter-mile bay swim, 10-mile bike and 3-mile run, while the duathlon includes a 1.5-mile run, followed by a 10-mile bike and another 3-mile run. The aqua/bike event is a quarter-mile swim followed by a 10-mile bike. The racing begins at 7:20 a.m. at Bayview Park in Brant Beach.

Online registration ends at midnight on Sept. 16, and the fees to register are as follows: $85 per competitor for the triathlon; $75 for the duathlon and aqua/bike; $95 for triathlon relay teams; $65 for duathlon relay teams. All participants must have a USAT insurance license or include $15 as a one-day insurance fee.

On-site registration will take place at Bayview Park from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 16, and, as well, beginning at 6 a.m. on the day of the competition.

Also new this year are two additional participant categories: “Clydesdale,” for men over 225 pounds, and “Athena,” for women over 165 pounds.

“DQ Events and Long Beach Township want to provide an event that welcomes everyone who wants to participate,” the coordinators noted.

For the triathlon, duathlon and paratriathlon, awards will be given to the top three overall male and female competitors, and the top three finishers in each of these age groups: 19-and-under; 20-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70-74 and 75-and-over. Aqua/bike awards are given to the top five male and female finishers.
