Barnegat Leader fall sports preview

Experience Should Pay Dividends for Barnegat Girls Tennis Team

Sep 15, 2017

The Barnegat High School girls tennis team went 9-12 in 2016 in what coach Sue Rogers called “a true rebuilding year.” Look for improvement in 2017, now that most of her girls have some experience.

“This year we have some young players who have the potential to make an impact,” said Rogers. “The players truly love the game of tennis and are hungry to succeed.”

The team is led by two seniors, Kelly and Amber Kantenwein. The former will fill the first singles slot while the latter will be Barnegat’s second singles representative. The twins both moved up a notch from last year, when Kelly played second singles and Amber third.

Sophomore Lily Spagnola will open the season at third singles. She was a first doubles player in 2016.

Junior Pimpakan Lerburtanakan and sophomore Madison Linton look to be the first doubles pair while the senior combo of Calista Bowie and Jillian Buscio will assume the second doubles role. Lerburtanakan played second doubles last year; Linton didn’t have a regular slot in 2016. Bowie and Buscio weren’t varsity players last year.

Senior Nicole Davies and junior Neena Singh, doubles players both, complete the roster. —R.M.
