Experienced Seniors Will Lead Pinelands Girls Basketball Team

Dec 07, 2018

The 2018-2019 Pinelands Regional High School girls basketball team is going to miss Jessie Rising, the squad’s leading scorer last year, and Jackie Peschko, one of last year’s leading rebounders, who were both lost to graduation.

On the other hand, coach Keith Lowe is buoyed by the thought of having four experienced seniors on this year’s roster so he hopes to be competitive against all teams in the Shore Conference B South Division.

Those seniors are guard Alyssa Vitiello and forwards Katie McGrotty, Calyn Conway and D’Anna Capriotti, who all played significant minutes in their 2017-2018 campaign.

They’ll be joined by junior forward Alyssa Breese, sophomore guards Tamar Beaubrun, Skylar Callahan, Sunni DiElmo and Morgan Muller, 10th-grade forwards Emily Fence and Maddison Stein and freshman guard Bridget Dudas. Lowe said he expects newcomers Callahan and Dudas to have an immediate impact on the team.

The team will be managed by Kati Coverdale, Julia Miron and Leslie Herrera.

The 2017-2018 team went 10-14 and 6-8 in B South play. It got off to a slow start, losing its first three games and four out of its first five. Indeed, the team was given no favors in its schedule, playing eight out of its first 10 games on the road.

This year’s schedule poses the same problem, with the ’Cats hitting the highway for its first four games and six out of its first seven.

The good new: If the construction at the Pinelands High School building continues on schedule, the team will once again be playing in its own gym come Jan. 3 when it is set to host Jackson Liberty. Last year, due to construction problems at the high school building, the girls had what had to be a frustrating year, enduring split sessions and being locked out of their gym, forcing them to practice and play homes games on the junior high floor until well into January.  —R.M.
