The first Bariatric Fashion Show displayed “amazing transformations and success stories” as it was hosted by The Center for Bariatrics at Southern Ocean Medical Center recently. As 18 patients modeled fitting fashions and shared their weight-loss stories, almost 100 friends and family attended the fashion show.

Bariatric surgeon Jonathan Reich, M.D., served as master of ceremonies and spoke about each patient’s accomplishments. The total combined weight loss for the 18 models was 2,542 pounds.

Local businesses supported the event by loaning clothing and accessories and donating door prizes.

Highlighting the physical transformation that the models have undergone since surgery, their runway appearance was sparked by hair and makeup services provided by other bariatric patients. Some patients also donated DJ, photography and videography services to make the night a true celebration.

The Center for Bariatrics at Southern Ocean Medical Center opened in 2009 and is the only Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence in Ocean County. As one of the most comprehensive programs in the region, it offers free informational sessions, pre-surgical education and evaluation, personal guidance through the surgical process, nutritional support, exercise components and support groups, notes the center.

The center is led by medical director Karl Strom, M.D., who has extensive experience in performing bariatric surgical procedures. Reich and surgeons Silvia Fresco, M.D., and Joseph Barbalinardo, M.D., complete the panel of physicians. To learn more about Southern Ocean’s Center for Bariatrics, call 609-978-3202. —M.S.
