File Trade Name of New Business

May 09, 2018

Ocean County residents interested in starting a new business can file the trade name with the Ocean County Clerk’s office. As part of National Small Business Week, county officials wanted to encourage visiting either the Stafford Township or Toms River locations.

“We see people daily filing for trade names. I applaud them for wanting to invest in their future here in Ocean County,” said Ocean County Clerk Scott M. Colabella.

Last year more than 500 men and women from Ocean County had their trade name certificate recorded at the county clerk’s office. Individuals conducting or transacting business under any assumed name or designation are required to file a business trade name certificate with the office.

Applicants simply complete a registration form that states the name, nature, address of the business and the names/residence addresses of the business owners. The registration form must be notarized, and the fee is $50. Banks or financial institutions require a trade name certificate when opening business accounts.

“The staff at the county clerk’s office can help you with this process,” said Ocean County Freeholder John P. Kelly, who serves as liaison to the Ocean County Clerk.

If you are thinking about starting a new business, go to the county clerk website at or visit the clerk’s Toms River Office at 118 Washington St., or the Manahawkin office at 179 South Main St. You can also call the offices at 732-506-5198 or 609-597-1500 for further information.

“So much goes into starting a new business,” said Ocean County Freeholder Director Gerry P. Little. “The Ocean County Clerk and his staff are there to help with this important step.”  —M.S.
