Fresh Fridays Is Latest Addition to Union Market and Gallery in Tuckerton

May 02, 2018

Every Friday until further notice, the Union Market and Gallery in Tuckerton hosts a farmers' market from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fresh Fridays is a collaboration between the MakeShift Union (Jeannine Errico, Erin Buterick and Dani Corso, who own and run the Union Market, located at the Tuckerton Seaport) and Sassafras Hill Farm manager Chris Adams. He had approached them in the wintertime, he said, about starting a farmers market during the off-season, so he could sell some of the crops from the farm.

Adams pointed out that in the LBI region, no farmers markets operate outside of the summer season, i.e. July through September, “yet, as a farmer, we grow produce from about April through January.”

So the team started planning a weekly market that would showcase products from real producers and provide an opportunity to sell almost year ’round.

To be eligible, Fresh Friday vendors must produce 100 percent of the product they sell, and either grow, raise or produce the product themselves. Adams believes “the farm market scene in New Jersey has been diluted with false producers and products; we are striving for a genuine experience and true market for consumers.”

Organizers feel Fresh Fridays is the area’s first true farmers market, and they plan to keep it going most of the year so consumers can buy seasonal products from a wide variety of producers.

To start, vendors include Sassafras Hill Farm of Barnegat, B&B Farms of Galloway, Ron’s Seafood of Viking Village, Kraken’s Kitchen of Beach Haven, and Black Eyed Susans of Harvey Cedars. “We hope more vendors will apply as the market grows,” Adams added.  —V.F.
