‘Garden Market’ Gearing Up for Green Thumbs

Mar 07, 2018

On Friday, March 23, The Garden Market will begin serving customers at 398 North Main St. (Route 9) in Barnegat Township at the former site of A’s Garden Center.

“There have been garden businesses there for a long time, so there won’t be a lot of changes needed,” said Claudia Ernest, whose husband, Frank, owns Shower Door Gallery in Manahawkin.

Frank Ernest said his wife had been looking into starting a seasonal business.

“When this property became available, we jumped at the chance,” he said. “My wife has enjoyed gardening as a hobby, so now she’s taking the next step and turning a hobby into a business.”

Claudia said that on the property, which covers slightly less than two acres, Garden Market will be selling soils, mulch and fertilizer, along with various tools and supplies.

“We’re also going to be selling a variety of Easter flowers,” she said. “As the season grows, we’ll start bringing in spring flowers and go on from there.”

Claudia said she’s planning an official grand opening ceremony on Saturday, May 12.

“That’s the Saturday before Mother’s Day, so by that time we should be drawing a lot more customers,” she said.

Last December, Claudia said, she used the lot to sell Christmas trees and other holiday decorative items.

“I thought that having a holiday sale would give me a chance to introduce ourselves to the community,” she said. “I have my roots in Barnegat. I love this town and am happy to be able to serve our residents.

“I hope a lot of the people who came to our Christmas tree lot will come back and visit us in the spring. We plan to meet all your gardening needs.” E.E.
