Although the Garden Market began serving customers at 398 North Main St. (Route 9) in Barnegat Township in March, owners waited for warmer weather to hold a grand opening ceremony, which took place June 9.

“There have been garden businesses there for a long time, so there weren’t a lot of changes needed,” said Claudia Ernest, who owns the business with her husband, Frank, who also owns Shower Door Gallery in Manahawkin.

Frank Ernest said his wife had been looking into starting a seasonal business.

“When this property became available, we jumped at the chance,” he said. “My wife has enjoyed gardening as a hobby, so now she’s taking the next step and turning a hobby into a business.”

Claudia said that on the property, which covers slightly less than two acres, Garden Market is selling a wide variety of perennials, annuals and shrubbery.

“We have a special area featuring pollinators, plants that attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds,” she said. “We have milkweed, which attracts Monarchs, along with butterfly bush and others. We’ve also done well with our vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and zucchini.”

The Garden Market, which has three greenhouses, also sells decorative items for the garden – fountains, statues, figurines and furniture.

“We also have organic fertilizers and mushroom fertilizers,” she said.

Garden Market also has a wide selection of garden tools and supplies.

“We have everything for the gardener,” Claudia said. “Months before we opened, we sold holiday trees and other decorative items on the lot. I thought that having a holiday sale would give us a chance to introduce ourselves to the community. I’m pleased that a lot of people who showed up then came back in the spring.”

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Telephone is 609-660-1120.
