Get a Taste of Delicious Frutta Bowls, Now on LBI

Customers of all ages gathered the weekend before last for the grand opening of Frutta Bowls at 12010 Long Beach Blvd. in Long Beach Township. The business was founded in 2016 by New Jersey native Brooke Gagliano, who looked to incorporate health and wellness into her career. Siblings Jenny, Raymond and Paul Kenny of Bayville now have brought the franchise to LBI.

“We wanted to go into one of the beach areas, and LBI seemed really nice and family-friendly,” said Jenny, who noted that she and her brothers are very family-oriented, with their young kids often with them at the shop.

As she explained, Frutta Bowls is “a health version of fast food. Instead of eating pancakes before the beach, choose fruit; it’s a better option. It’s filling, but it’s healthy.”

The establishment offers bowls filled with bases of either the “superfood” açaí berry, pitaya (the fruit of certain cactus species, and commonly known as dragonfruit) or kale, and topped with other fresh ingredients, all of which are meant to pack a tasty punch, with antioxidants and nutrients and no added sugar.

“Finding new, fresh tasting and healthy ingredients that people find enjoyable to eat is incredibly hard,” states the company website, “Often times, ‘health food’ is not the epitome of flavor, which is certainly not the case with açaí.

“When our founder … first tried açaí berry pure, she was floored.”

Frutta Bowls also offers oatmeal bowls, smoothies, “summer chiller” drinks, house-made protein balls and paleo cookies.

“Our smoothies are amazing,” Jenny said of the concoctions, made with almond milk and fruit. Smoothies and bowls can be customized, or customers can simply order one off the menu (or call ahead to order).

The “Frutella Bowl” – organic açaí with banana base, topped with granola, strawberry, pineapple, kiwi, nutella, peanut butter, honey and coconut flakes – is a best seller at the LBI location, and both the “Tropical” smoothie, with pineapple, mango, banana and water, and the “Chocolate Explosion,” a blend of chocolate whey protein, banana, nutella, peanut butter and sweetened almond milk, are current customer favorites.

And Frutta Bowls on LBI offers gluten-, dairy- and soy-free options, and features an “allergy station,” so that an order can be prepared in a separate section of the shop.

The Kennys take their ingredients and the resultant products seriously because they take their customers seriously.

“Each Frutta Bowls franchise strives to get to know the surrounding community on a deeper level, creating relationships and focusing on giving back,” the website notes. “It is our goal to not only be in a community but to be part of the community.”

When the shop first opened, the Kennys dropped off for the Island municipalities açaí fruit platters (which are great for barbecues and other events, said Jenny, as they “bring a different appeal”), and they give 20 percent discounts to lifeguards and police officers, and plan to sponsor some of the local lifeguard tournaments.

They also enjoy chatting with those who patronize the establishment. “We like to get to know our customers,” Jenny remarked. “And our repetitive customer base is growing,” helped in part by the business’ customer rewards program, and, of course, the eye-catching, delicious food.

The business is open every day from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
