There’s no better way to get into the giving spirit of the holidays than gathering with a friendly community for a great cause. And that’s what the Thanks 4 Giving 5K is all about – helping the Hunger Foundation of Southern Ocean fight hunger locally by running or walking off those few pounds you gained while stuffing your stomach on Thanksgiving Day.

That’s exactly what Jackson Braddock and 99 other runners and walkers did for last year’s inaugural “runraiser.” Braddock, then a Southern Regional middle-schooler who this fall has been running for the high school boys cross-country team, won the 3.1-mile race through Beach Haven in 19:45 while the rest of the field, including some from as far away as Florida, trekked the course in under an hour to help raise money for HFOSO.

This year’s 5K is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25, at Veterans Memorial Park on Engleside Avenue in Beach Haven. The registration fee per runner is $30; all proceeds go to benefit the foundation. Registration is open until Nov. 20, and participants registered by Nov. 15 are guaranteed race T-shirts. Awards are given to the top-three male and female runners, along with the following groups: 12-and-under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60-and-over.

Founded in 1995, HFOSO is a local, all volunteer nonprofit organization with a mission to support local food pantries as they assist residents with basic food needs, and to help educate the public of the basic food needs of individuals and families in Southern Ocean County. The foundation has raised and donated more than $1,045,000 to date.

Wobble First, Gobble Second

Of course, if you’re a runner, you absolutely should run in the hunger foundation’s 5K. But if you’re a serious runner or walker, you also should try out the annual Gobble Wobble 5K, Half-Mile Drumstick Dash and One-Mile Run hosted by the Southern Ocean Ladies Running Club, slated for Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23.

The annual event benefits CASA of Ocean County, which advocates for at-risk, abused and neglected children placed within foster families, and the Stafford Township Police DARE program. In addition to raising funds to help CASA of Ocean County, Gobble Wobble participants also are encouraged to bring a new toy for the annual CASA Christmas party, which allows some 200 children to have a special day.

Held at the Stafford Township municipal building, the Gobble Wobble 5K is set for 8:30 a.m. The Half-Mile Drumstick Dash, during which many children often enjoy chasing the runner dressed up like a turkey, kicks off the event at 8 a.m., while the One-Mile Run takes off at 8:15 a.m. The registration fee for the 5K is $30 per runner, while the Half-Mile and One-Mile runs are $10 per person.
