To the Editor:

The 2018 Barnegat Township budget was just passed, and it should make Barnegat taxpayers pleased.

The average homeowner will see the smallest township property tax increase in six years, only $26 per house for the year.

My congratulations to Barnegat’s Chief Financial Officer Tom Lombarski for a job well done and to new Police Chief Keith Germain, Barnegat Township Administrator Marty Lisella and all the department heads that made this possible.

My first thought is the moves and acquisitions this committee made over the last few years.

How did it happen? Two years ago, this committee hired Mr. Lombarski as CFO. His energy, dedication and ability have proven to be very valuable to Barnegat.

The township hired Mr. Lisella. He has saved over $1 million in operating expenses and continues to streamline all operations.

Barnegat promoted Mr. Germain to chief, and despite the new police contracts he has reduced his department’s cost and expenses without any reduction in safety.

As directed by Mr. Lisella, our code enforcer has been diligent in substantially increasing necessary fines on code violations for owners and out-of-town landlords, which in turn is leading to maintaining our neighborhoods, increasing revenue and discouraging speculative purchases.

The township committee has received health benefits for some 30 years since authorized in 1987. However, this year the committee passed a resolution ending that practice and thereby saving the township almost $80,000.

The committee also made changes to our attorney representation by reducing retainer fees, which saved over $50,000.

In addition, the township has continued to reduce bonding debt to the point that the cost of the new town hall and public works building will have little impact on the local taxpayer.

This is all good news for Barnegat taxpayers, which includes yours truly.

Please remember the township committee only controls township taxes and not school or county tax assessments.

Al Bille, committeeman
