Grunin Center to Host a Variety of Shows This January

Critically acclaimed jazz vocal group New York Voices, accompanied by student musicians from Southern Regional High School, will perform the first show of 2018, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 12.

From jazz to sports to world music and more, the Jay and Linda Grunin Center for the Arts at Ocean County College features an exciting lineup of entertainment in January. Tickets are available now.

Critically acclaimed jazz vocal group New York Voices, accompanied by student musicians from Southern Regional High School, will perform the first show of 2018, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 12. Tickets are $35.

Then, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 19, enjoy An Evening with Todd Frazier, as the former Toms River Little Leaguer and pro baseball player talks with moderator Russ Salzberg. As the college notes, “Frazier discusses his experiences playing and growing up in Toms River through his Major League career” with the Cincinatti Reds, the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees. Regular admission is $35, or $25 for subscribers.

Next up, at 8 p.m. on Jan. 20, is folk musician John Gorka with singer-songwriter Amilia K. Spicer. Tickets are $25.

The Midiri Brothers Salute Benny Goodman’s Carnegie Hall Concert on Jan. 24 at 8 p.m. Seat prices range from $20 to $24.

The following day, at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 25, Black String takes the main stage. “Based on traditional Korean and improvisational music, Black String aims to seek a new sound that can internalize a variety of musical expressions in traditional music and jazz,” OCC explains. “The group creates a unique language through Asian intuition and musical idiom.” Tickets are $20.

And on Jan. 30, at 7:30 p.m., Las Cafeteras will remix sounds from rock to hip-hop to rancheras to create vibrant musical fusion with a unique East L.A. sound. “The group,” the college points out, “uses music as a vehicle to build bridges among cultures and communities.” Admission is $20.

The Grunin Center is located on the OCC main campus on College Drive in Toms River.
