Letters

Harassed by Dogs

Nov 29, 2017

To the Editor:

I would like to add to the chain of letters during the past several weeks regarding unleashed dogs on the beach – in my case, Beach Haven. There has not been a time during the entire fall that I have walked or fished on the beach without being annoyed or harassed by dogs.

This past Saturday, two people allowed their four unleashed dogs, two of which were large and aggressive, to run all over the beach. After one dog charged at me and then urinated on my cooler, I called the Beach Haven police. An officer responded very quickly, chasing the people until he caught up with them. The dogs were immediately put on their leashes, of course.

I recommend that everyone call the police so that these inconsiderate dog owners can be controlled.

I am a dog owner who gets very frustrated by unleashed, unruly dogs. Yes, I take my dog to the beach in HC during the off season and I do take his leash off. But he stays right by my side or no more than 20 feet from me at all times. As soon as we notice anyone or any animal within two blocks on the beach, the leash goes on immediately.  It’s just plain common courtesy. You don’t know if someone is afraid of dogs, has allergies, if the other animal is aggressive, etc.
