At Harbor Bay Community’s Dec. 14 Board of Trustees meeting, the Safety Committee accepted an award from the National Fire Protection Association officially recognizing Harbor Bay in Little Egg Harbor as a Firewise community.

New Jersey’s Division of Parks and Forestry administers the state’s Firewise program, which allows for certain thinning or removal of trees and shrubs within 30, 75 or 100 feet of buildings, depending on the fire risk. Since Harbor Bay is situated in one of New Jersey’s most heavily forested areas, the Pine Barrens, the community was eligible to apply for membership as a Firewise community.

Harbor Bay’s Safety Committee drives the community’s Firewise program. After more than a year of preparation, in September 2017, Harbor Bay’s application was accepted by the NFPA, and it became one of the nation’s 1,400-plus Firewise communities throughout 42 states. If the community continues to complete the program’s required annual criteria, it will have access to grant monies helping protect Harbor Bay from wildfire. Art Elliott, Harbor Bay’s Safety Committee chairman, pointed out that “maintaining Firewise status in the community is not only a committee task; every resident partakes in that responsibility – our lives and properties depend on it!”

The National Fire Protection Association is a global nonprofit organization, established in 1896, devoted to eliminating death, injury, property and economic loss due to fire, electrical and related hazards  (nfpa.org/About-NFPA). Part of the “NFPA’s Wildfire Division’s mission is to protect people and property in communities at risk from wildfire.”
