Hats Off to Stafford Township’s Leadership

Dec 19, 2018

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the article about responses to Stafford Township’s ban on single-use plastic bags (“Stafford Township Single-Use Bag Ban Has Bumpy Launch,” 12/12).

Remember when people could smoke anywhere they wanted? Think of the lives that have been saved since the ban just by discouraging people from smoking. Do we want to go back to the days where secondhand smoke was the norm?

Remember when there were no seat belts in cars? Or car seats for children? Again, think of the lives saved. Who would want to go back to those earlier days?

Now think about plastic bags. The plastic problem is so big, so expensive and so devastating that eliminating single-use plastic shopping bags is just a step in the right direction, not even close to the solution. We have to start somewhere. Hats off to Stafford Township for taking the lead. Hopefully, the state will follow. It’s the right thing to do.

In 10 words or less, the message everyone should be getting is BYOB – Bring Your Own Bag. Your grandchildren will be happy you did.
