Hear Shanties From the Sea Dogs in Little Egg Harbor June 24

Jun 19, 2017

Music of the high seas will be on the bill when the Sea Dogs perform at the Little Egg Harbor branch of the Ocean County Library on Saturday, June 24, at 2 p.m. In a program sponsored by the Friends of the branch, the pirate re-enactment group will perform hand-clapping, foot-stomping, traditional sea shanties and songs of the sea. The six-member band will also teach about sailors, geography and life at sea.

On its website, the group says, “In the days of wooden ships powered by sail, the shantey was the work song of the sailor. They not only provided rhythm for the task at hand, but also helped keep up the spirits of the crew. Most shanties followed a simple pattern, where the lead singer would sing a line and the crew joined in on the chorus.”

To register for the program, call the branch at 609-294-1197. E.E.
