As Labor Day weekend arrives, the local sports focus begins to shift to the high school fall sports season. And the action gets underway as soon as the three-day holiday weekend passes, with a bunch of teams slated to open their seasons on Sept. 4.

Following last year’s Shore Conference Class B South division championship and subsequent deep run into the Shore Conference Tournament, the Pinelands Regional boys soccer team brings back most of its starting lineup and will look to repeat its success. The Wildcats start on the road at 3:45 p.m. against Jackson Memorial in a rematch of last year’s SCT quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, coach Dawn Paget’s Pinelands girls soccer team also opens against the Jaguars, but Aileen Cahill, Alex Hana, Brenna DeVoe and crew begin their season at home, also scheduled for 3:45 p.m. At 5:15 p.m., coach Kathy Bennett’s girls volleyball squad, the defending Shore Conference champions, gets its season started with what should be a tough contest against Red Bank Catholic. The girls tennis team goes on the road to Southern Regional for its first match of the season at 3:45 p.m.

Besides the girls tennis match, Southern’s girls soccer team, under the guidance of second-year coach Kailtyn Hartkopf, kicks off its new season at home against Atlantic Tech, with the opening whistle set for 3:45 p.m. Coach Guy Lockwood’s boys soccer team goes to Atlantic Tech for its opener at 4 p.m.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, several Barnegat fall squads get their season started. In fact, the girls and boys soccer teams will have a home doubleheader – the girls go up against Mater Dei Prep at 4 p.m., followed by the boys against B South rival Lakewood. Also at home that day will be coach Sue Rogers’ girls tennis team, which also takes on Lakewood, at 3:45 p.m.

At Southern on Sept. 5, coach Jenna Lombardo’s young but talented field hockey team takes on Shore Conference Class A South foe Toms River South in an important divisional contest at 3:45 p.m., while the girls tennis team hosts Jackson Liberty. The boys soccer team will play its home opener as well, taking on Manalapan at 4 p.m. —D.B.
