The high school spring sports season last year was stellar, with multiple local squads capturing NJSIAA state or sectional championships. Can the Southern Regional boys volleyball team pull off a three-peat as state champs? Can Jessie Rising and Brianna Suralik lead the Pinelands Regional softball team to a second straight South Jersey Group III title? And what about the Southern baseball team – does it have enough in the tank to make another run at a South Jersey Group IV crown?

Well, those questions and more soon will be answered. And even though the weather remains a bit cool, the new season is about to heat up as many squads begin their quests for division, sectional and state crowns during the latter half of this week.

It all begins Wednesday, March 28, when the lacrosse season opens up with the Southern boys and girls both hosting Howell at 4 p.m., while the Barnegat boys get their campaign underway at home against New Egypt, also at 4 p.m.

On Thursday, March 29, the Southern lacrosse teams again are scheduled to be in action – coach Lori Johnson’s squad at home against Holmdel, while coach John Pampalone’s boys hit the road to play the Hornets. Also, the Southern and Barnegat girls golf teams will begin their seasons, against each other, in a 3:45 p.m. contest at the Ocean County Golf Course at Atlantis.

On Saturday, March 31, with sunny weather in the forecast, the scholastic slate gets a little heavier, as the local baseball, softball and volleyball squads join the fray.

At Barnegat High School, the girls lacrosse team opens against Ranney, starting at 10 a.m., while the baseball and softball teams host Long Branch at 11 a.m. At Pinelands, both the baseball and softball teams host Central Regional at 10 a.m., while the girls lacrosse team goes on the road to Monmouth Regional. The Southern boys volleyball squad goes on the road to play in the Hillsborough Invitational, while the Rams’ baseball crew goes to Donovan Catholic for an 11 a.m. contest, and both the softball and girls lacrosse teams host Henry Hudson and Toms River South, respectively, at 10 a.m.
