History of New Jersey’s Fruit: The Blueberry

The Tuckerton Historical Society presents “Blueberries: New Jersey’s Wonder Fruit” on Saturday, June 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Giffordtown Schoolhouse Museum in Little Egg Harbor.

Food historian Judith Kroll-Russo will discuss the origins of New Jersey’s blueberry starting with its use by Native Americans and early settlers, the cultivation by Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Cole in the 1900s and continuing through today’s blueberry agriculture. The blueberry is touted as a wonder fruit with a host of healthful benefits. Kroll-Russo will also bring and share recipes.  —P.J.
