Island Singers in America-Themed Concert

Jun 04, 2018

“I Hear America Singing” is the theme for three Saturday evening concerts by the Island Singers this month. The opener is June 9 at 8 p.m. at the Barnegat Township Community Center at 900 West Bay Ave. The group will perform June 16, also at 8, at the Long Beach Island Historical Museum, located at the corner of Engleside and Beach avenues in Beach Haven.

The finale is Saturday, June 23, at 7:30 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 130 Cable Ave.  in Beachwood.

Musical director Polly Moore said the program will feature various works of American composers and patriotic tunes, such as “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “Shenandoah,” “This Is My Country” and “When the Saints Go Marching In” among others. There will also be a medley of armed forces theme songs.

After the summer, the group rehearses Tuesday nights from 7 to 9 at the Village Lutheran Church in Lanoka Harbor. The Island Singers mission statement says its goal is to provide quality choral musical programs of a diverse makeup and broad appeal to Ocean County areas.

“We will keep alive some of the great musical heritage of the past, while delivering current selections,” it says. “Our philosophy is to use the art of music to foster a sense of community and family to our participants and audiences.”
